Exploring Ecojustice Ed in Teacher Education in Urban Environments 2025
Members of the ESE-TE Network gatherred for an afternoon of dialogue, place-based learning, and community-building as a pre-CSSE conference gathering in Toronot in May 2025. Two panels of scholars offered ways to re/consider the praxis of ecojustice education in urban environments to stimulate discussion on the critical role teacher education plays in helping our communities shift toward equitable, just and sustainable futures. Then an interactive walking tour invites all to participate in place-based learning activities to support transformative approaches to eco-justice concepts in the heart of Toronto.

ESE-TE National Research Symposium 2023
The ESE-TE Standing Committee hosted its biennial Research Symposium on ESE-TE in May 2023 at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) of the University of Toronto. The theme of this Symposium, “Teacher Education for a Sustainable Future: Call to Action for Climate Justice” shared presentations of scholarship focused on the critical role teacher education plays in helping society work toward an equitable, just and sustainable future. This hybrid symposium built on the momentum for more substantially integrating ESE into teacher education at Canadian universities, and considered how the launch of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education’s Accord on Education for a Sustainable Future promises to accelerate working towards these goals.
National Accord on Education for a Sustainable Future 2022
The launch for the Association of Canadian Deans of Education’s (ACDE) Accord on Education for a Sustainable Future took place in March 2022. The Accord directs faculties of education to help meet Canada’s commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by integrating ESE and climate change education into preservice and inservice teacher education programs, establishing a new priority for teacher education across Canada, in line with Canada’s climate action targets. By implementing this new Accord in parallel with the ACDE’s Accord on Indigenous Education, students in faculties of education will benefit from a synergy that centres equity, justice and sustainability for all living beings at the heart of all levels of education. As a starting point, refer to this Primer on ESE in Teacher Education that can be shared with Deans, faculty and community partners interested in learning more about this critical work.
